Above is a flowchart that I created to depict partly my coaching philosophy and the way I create programs.
This stemmed from a conversation with another intern, who typically takes research at face value and I feel neglects coaching experience and peers advice on exercise selection and Coaching decisions.
I developed this template as I feel it is somewhat prudent to neglect one aspect of the areas above which should inform your exercise selection and coaching decisions.
Although this is a basic framework, within each of the three main areas are subtopics, for example; performing a needs analysis or creating injury prevention strategies could both come under personal coaching experience or peers advice and experience.
Lastly the two final areas are usually a back and forth/ elimination process from an exercise database that I have formed in my head from the previous element of the flowchart.
Once Ideas have been disscussed and critiqued, I feel the next question to ask is if the exercise in question is worth the Risk vs. the reward. For example if you're working with an athlete with a lack of trunk strength, is it worth performing a squat pattern with the possible risk of injury due to the load or would it be acceptable to perform a leg press?
The final topic is whether or not the exercise you have chosen has a more beneficial counterpart which could improve performance at a faster rate. This can be linked back to the top of the flow chart whereby the decision making process is ongoing, conversing with colleagues and utilising findings in research until a clear decision can be made.
